This recent blog post reminded me that I need to give some love to my meagre Dotfiles repo.
Dotfile sharing is a refreshing outpost in the sea of GitHub repos. A reminder that the tinkerer-hacker ethos is not yet extinguished.
I think if a future anthropologist were to encounter a Dotfiles repo, they’d classify them as some sort of digital ritual artifacts or technosocial talismans.
There are all sorts of interesting artifacts on GitHub, but there’s something special about perusing a dotfiles repo. There’s a somewhat standardized grammar. There’s a touch of the personal beyond what is typical in things we release. There’s a mix of quaint technoplatitudes along with things eminently useful. “Oh, that’s clever!” always seems to be around the corner and maybe that’s where the allure enters.
Life is busy but I will try to give a bit more loving care to my dotfiles repo in Q3 of 2025. And perhaps share about it here. My goal will be firstly greater utility for me and then secondarily perhaps offer more things that are inspiring for others. As it is, even with my meagre setup, I realize that I give seven shout-outs to people who inspired me in this area. Taking inspiration, and hopefully giving it also, is what it is all about.
